Changing your tax address in Spain: Modelo 030 explained
Your tax address is not an administrative detail. It is the address where the Spanish Tax Agency sends everything it has to tell you — and a notice sent to an address you left three years ago still counts as delivered.
Nobody updates it for you
Changing the address on the town hall register, with your bank or on your residence card does not reach the Tax Agency. Its census is separate, and the only way to correct it is to file the change yourself, with Modelo 030.
Three situations, one form
- You moved within Spain. Straightforward: the new Spanish address replaces the old one.
- You left Spain and are no longer tax resident here. Your tax address becomes your address abroad, and you are recorded as a non-resident. If you keep property or income in Spain, you still have obligations here — they just follow different rules.
- You moved to Spain. The same form registers your Spanish address and your new status.
Leaving Spain: the date that matters
People assume their tax residence changes the day they board the plane. It does not. Spanish tax residence is decided over full calendar years, essentially by the 183-day rule: spend more than 183 days in Spain in a calendar year and you are tax resident here for that entire year.
That is why, when the change of tax residence is recorded, the effective date is normally 1 January of the year concerned, not the date of the move. Getting this right matters: it decides which country taxes your worldwide income that year, and it is exactly the sort of detail the Tax Agency checks later.

Update my address →Frequently asked questions
Is there a deadline?
A change of tax address should be notified promptly, and in any case before it causes a problem. There is no benefit in waiting.
I no longer have any income in Spain. Do I still have to do it?
If you are in the Spanish tax census, keeping your address current is still the sensible course, particularly if you own property here.
Does this cancel my NIE?
No. Your number stays the same. What changes is the address and, where relevant, your residence status.
Can I do it myself?
Yes, at the Tax Agency's electronic office if you have a digital certificate or Cl@ve, or in person with an appointment. Most of our clients come to us because they have neither and are no longer in Spain.
