Spanish tax number without a NIE: how to get a NIF from abroad
You have been asked for a Spanish tax number, you live outside Spain and you have no NIE — and nobody can tell you how to get one without flying to Madrid. There is a procedure for exactly this situation, and it can be done entirely by post and email.
NIE, NIF: which one do you actually need?
The NIE is an identity number for foreigners, issued by the National Police. It is tied to living, working or having certain interests in Spain, and getting one normally means an appointment in person, either in Spain or at a Spanish consulate.
The NIF is your tax identification number, issued by the Spanish Tax Agency. If you have a NIE, that same number works as your NIF once you are registered in the tax census. If you do not have a NIE and you are not obliged to have one, the Tax Agency can still give you a NIF of its own — a number starting with the letter M.
Who needs a NIF without having a NIE
- Directors of foreign companies that trade in Spain — for example an EU company registered for VAT One-Stop-Shop sales, or one subject to Extended Producer Responsibility obligations. The company needs its own Spanish tax number, and to apply for it, its director needs one first.
- Non-resident lenders, buyers and sellers who appear in a Spanish deed or tax return next to somebody else.
- Heirs living abroad who inherit assets located in Spain.
- Shareholders and partners being appointed in a Spanish company.
What the Tax Agency requires
The application is made with Modelo 030, marking the box for the application of a NIF by an individual who does not hold a DNI or NIE. Three things have to travel with it:
| Document | Detail |
|---|---|
| Signed Modelo 030 | The form must carry your own handwritten signature. A representative can file it, but cannot sign it for you. |
| Passport | A colour copy of the page with your photograph and personal details, fully legible. |
| Evidence of the transaction | Whatever proves you have a genuine tax-relevant reason: a company registry extract, a contract, a deed, a notice from a Spanish authority. |
The name and date of birth on the form must match the passport exactly, and the place of birth has to state the town and the country, not just the country. It sounds trivial; it is the single most common reason these files stall.
How the procedure works
The application is submitted through the Tax Agency's Electronic Register, under the procedure for a NIF for individuals without a DNI or NIE, filed on your behalf by an authorised representative with a Spanish digital certificate. In practice the sequence is:
- You send us your details and your passport.
- We prepare the Modelo 030 and an authorisation of representation, and email both to you.
- You print, sign and scan them.
- We file everything and send you the official filing receipt the same day.
- When the number is assigned, we send you the Tax Agency's card.

Is the NIF the same as a NIE?
No. A NIE is issued by the police to foreigners with an interest in Spain; a NIF is your tax number with the Tax Agency. If you hold a NIE, it doubles as your NIF once you are registered in the tax census. If you have no NIE, the Tax Agency issues a separate number beginning with M.
Does it expire?
The number itself does not expire. If you later obtain a NIE, that becomes your tax number and the earlier one is replaced.
Does it make me a Spanish tax resident?
No. Holding a Spanish tax number says nothing about where you are resident for tax purposes. Residence depends on where you actually live, essentially on the 183-day rule.
I already have a NIE but the Tax Agency does not recognise it.
Then you do not need this procedure — you need to be registered in the tax census, which is a different use of the same form. See our guide on what Modelo 030 is.
